Ripon is a charming little city nestled in North Yorkshire, England, and holds the distinction of being the smallest city in the country. It was granted city status back in 1836, largely thanks to its magnificent ancient cathedral.

Despite being a city, the population is small and is estimated around 16,000 – 17,000 people.

  • Compact and easy to explore on foot, Ripon is a charming city that is perfect for a leisurely stroll, but having a car can be quite beneficial for exploring nearby attractions. Public transport services are also available, making it easy to travel to towns like Harrogate and York for a day out.

  • Situated in the heart of Ripon, is the Cathedral. It is open daily and admission entry is free, however, donations are welcome.
    Founded by St. Wilfrid in the 7th century, Ripon Cathedral is one of the oldest religious sites in England. The crypt from this period still exists today and is a remarkable example of early Christian architecture.

  • At Christmas time, Ripon offers festive markets and decorations for a truly magical time. Look out for free or affordable parking areas such as the Market Place or St Marygate car park.

  • When Spring and summer come around, Ripon is ideal for enjoying outdoor attractions and events.

  • Ripon is a delightful family destination, offering plenty of attractions to enjoy, ideal for history enthusiasts, nature lovers, and families alike. Not forgetting Ripon Horse Racing, often named the Garden Racecourse, it is located approximately 1.5 miles south of Ripon city center.

  • Although Ripon lacks a railway station, it's simple to take a train to nearby Harrogate or Northallerton. Once there, you can take a bus or a taxi to the racecourse. Additionally, local buses frequently depart from Ripon's city center, offering easy access to Ripon Races.

  • Remember to book accommodation early, to avoid dissapointment, especially on a race day.
